A case of mistaken nationality

So...
(I always like to begin a paragraph as if we were already in the middle of a conversation)

as we were leaving the temple early Saturday morning, the gentleman at the welcome desk looked at my honey and said "Aloha, Mele Kalikimaka"

Apparently he looks more Hawaiian than Latin.

What do you think?

On the flip side, I look mostly albino so I guess I'll just say
Jutdlime pivdluarit ukiortame pivdluaritlo!
(That's "Merry Christmas" in Eskimo. )
No really... I looked it up!

PS. I'm in no way insinuating that all Eskimo's are albinos - just some of them.

Just kidding, I love Eskimos, here are my top 10 favorite Eskimo Proverbs.

1. Don't let the windows of your home be so small that the light of the sun cannot enter your rooms.
2. Even the strongest eagle cannot soar higher than the stars.
3. You never really know your friends from your enemies until the ice breaks.
4. He that boasts of his own knowledge proclaims his ignorance.
5. If you are going to walk on thin ice, you might as well dance.
6. Unless you're the lead sled dog, the view is pretty much the same.
7. Love comes after marriage.
8. May you have kindness in your heart, a plump woman in your furs, and seal meat in you larder.
9. May you have warmth in your igloo, oil in your lamp, and peace in your heart.
10. May your charity increase as much as your wealth.

(on a personal note, my favorites are 5, 6, &8)

PPS. Tomorrow I may go back to talking about the continential US, but for now...
Mele Kalikimaka and Jutdlime pivdluarit ukiortame pivdluaritlo!

On the 1st day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

I tried to get a picture of this, but it was really hard. We went to the grocery store to get some (shocking I know) food and as we were leaving we were approached by someone who appeared to be homeless asking for money. Neither of us had any cash, and let's be honest, I probably wouldn't have given any anyway - I just don't trust that they won't use the money for alcohol or something.

So we got in the car and were ready to pull away and we saw the man who had asked us for money and another man sitting on some steps on the sidewalk. We looked at them and they looked at us and it was one of those awkward pauses. You know, like when a car salesman asks you if he can help and you don't immediately say no so then you're stuck with the guy. Well it was one of those moments. They knew we saw them and we waited too long to not help them in some way.

So my honey quickly put the car in park, got out, and asked either man if they were hungry. One jumped up and immediately asked for a beer. When he told the man that he wouldn't buy him a beer, but he could buy him some food if he was hungry, he got this annoyed, pouty look and sat back down on the steps to sulk. The other gentleman stood up and said that he'd take a burrito so my honey walked with him into the taco shop and bought him a burrito. I tried to capture this on film but I didn't want either to know I was taking a picture so the result isn't very clear.
(I apologize for the somewhat distracting wiper blade taking up half the picture)
So what did my true love give to me?
Charity, kindness, selflessness, love
The true meaning of Christmas.

On the 2nd day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

A trip to a Mexican grocery store, which included....

A surpise visit to a decked out shrine.

Little did we know it was the Virgen of Guadalupe day. If I had know I could've brought my candle. (When in Rome...)

My sister Cathy was with me to record such an eventful trip to the grocery store.
(I won't tell you about the rancid smells near the meat department. I'm pretty sure they butcher the animals right there on site and we were smelling the result of months of not cleaning those hard to reach cracks in the countertops and corners. Cathy had to walk away and I unsuccessfully tried to discretely plug my nose while not offending anyone.)
Sorry, I guess I ended up telling you after all.
Feliz Navidad!

On the 3rd day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

MORE SNOW

Only this time he started the snowfall too early and forgot that I would be in Phoenix at the time trying to catch a flight home.

No such luck and I was stuck there one more night until they reopened the airport.
But the good news is I came home to this.

On the 4th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

Yummy pupusas that he made himself.

Yes that is smoke you see in the pan... Cooking everything on full heat is what my honey does best. Despite having the vent on full blast and all the doors to the house open, we still managed to fill the entire house with smoke. Maybe that is the best part of pupusas - being able to enjoy their smell for days after.
I love that you can totally see some creepy lady on the TV over his shoulder.
The final results. Delicious!

On the 5th day of Christmas....

my true love gave to me...

Date night to see

It was my honey's first time and my second. I'd forgotten (no pun intended) some of the songs so it was good to hear them again.

You can't really see the stage, but we're more important anyway.
You also can't tell that we'd both gone to the dentist earlier in the day and although my novicane had worn off at this time, my honey was still a little numb.

Probably the best way to experience a little Michael McLean

The choir was amazing.
(I had to give a little shout out to my friends who were in it!)

On the 6th day of Christmas....

my true love gave to me...

(See the white stuff on Frosty's mittens!)

SNOW!!!!

That's right, it snowed in Las Vegas and it was great! Freezing, but great!

I bet you didn't know that my honey could do that, but he did. He even made it disappear so we didn't have to shovel any sidewalks or drive on slick roads.

Isn't he the best?

On the 7th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

A yummy salad for me to eat at work. You can tell he made it for me because he spent so much time cutting the carrots. Now that's L O V E!

I'm actually eating this as I'm typing right now and I almost forgot to capture the goodness so that's why it's almost gone.

The only problem is... the salad smells like FOOT!
I mean like some nasty, didn't wear socks in plastic closed toe shoes STINKY FOOT! It doesn't taste like foot, just smells like it. I have no clue why. The dressing is a nice vinaigrette and it hasn't gone bad, it tastes good. The salad hasn't gone bad, but OOOOOWEEEEE, that is some nasty smell.

I have to grab a forkful and then move the bowl away so I won't smell it. Seriously, smell it. Take a whiff of your computer screen. I'm sure it's potent enough to stay on the screen.

Is it wrong of me to eat something that tastes fine, but smells so horrible.

Don't judge me!

Hmmm, is this the container I keep dirty socks in?

On the 8th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

A precious poinsettia plant for the top of the stairs.

I usually keep a (I hate to say it) fake flower arrangement here.

I promised myself as a naive college student that I would never have fake flowers in my house and I would always have fresh flower arrangements. I think I promised myself that one day while watching Martha. I swore to myself that I would rather have no flowers than have plastic ones.

Those hopes and dreams were dashed when reality hit and I needed something on the top of this table.

Now my honey is keeping me honest by getting me a REAL poinsettia plant. Technically not flowers, but close enough.

On the 9th day of Christmas...

my truelove gave to me...

Some stellar Christmas ornaments for my beautiful new tree. (Thank you black Friday sales!)

Not only did he pick out the star, but that dove and silver reindeer were the result of his quick trip to Target. The man surprises me. Those cheap ball ornaments are what I picked out and he goes for some fancy stuff.

On the 10th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me....

A sparkling clean kitchen!

Ok, I know you're way jealous right now,

but technically my honey didn't clean this, I did...

However, I consider it a huge success that he hasn't messed it up yet.

On the 11th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me...

7 loads of laundry...

Folded!

He even cleaned up his side of the bed!

Don't ask me how 2 people manage to build up 7 loads of laundry.

We haven't just returned from a trip

We didn't just go on a shopping spree at DI

No lice or bed bug investation here...

just lots of dirty clothes.

Do you think it has something to do with the fact that I haven't washed clothes in a couple of weeks?

Nah, I doubt it. Just some random freak accident.

On the 12th day of Christmas...

my true love gave to me.

Date night to see "ICE" at the Riviera. We had front row tickets which was amazing since they were free! Although it was really good, I don't think I would've ever paid $86 a ticket to see it. They had some cool tricks and the best part about sitting in the front row is that you get to see everyone's facial expressions and all the little details. The worst part about sitting in the front was the ice. It's pretty cold and we even got sprayed once.
This was the cool stilt skater who came out right at the begining of the show. We took this picture right before they announced that photo-taking was strickly prohibited. We're so rebelous!
And... my favorite part about this picture is...
The complete stranger who is trying to duck out of the shot! Little does she know, not only did we capture her in the picture, but I've now posted her on the internet!

Tuesday, December 2, 2008

I like to think I'm a stylista - I have a magic mirror that tells me it's true!

It's not uncommon here in Vegas to see some tourist, at least I assume they are a tourist, dressed up to the nines and I mean to the nines (and I don't even know what that means). It's usually a very pretty lady or maybe perhaps even a slightly less aesthetically pleasing lady who has over compensated by carrying a really expensive handbag/really good fake handbag and maybe some fur, fake of course since you would hate to have your look ruined by some animal-loving-flour-throwing-PETA activists.
Where was I?
Oh yeah, so picture a really dressed up lady. We're talking little black dress, 10 inch heels, Elizabeth Taylor's jewelery collection, professional hair and make-up, the works. Do you have her in your head? My mental image looks something like Angelina Jolie meets Audrey Hepburn (she has a killer long neck). So you have this way hot lady and then you have her date/lover/friend/boyfriend/husband. She is obviously the arm candy in the relationship because the male companion is wearing (never fail) a plaid shirt, or if she's lucky, a polo, some wrangler jeans or... dare I say...(gasp)...jean shorts! Perhaps some scruffy shoes and unkempt hair underneath a baseball cap advertising his favorite brand of beer.
What a classy couple.
I took the following picture when my honey took me to the movies last week. I wanted to show the wonderful view we had since we were the only ones in the theater. I had intended to blog about that.
Instead, as I look at this picture I'm reminded of those lovely "tourist" couples that I often see on the strip (and make fun of in my mind). I didn't have time to change after work so I went in what I had been wearing all day. Unfortunately I also didn't have time to dress my honey who finds it appropriate to wear grey socks with black tennis shoes (sorry Jen - avert your eyes). The worst part is, I didn't even realized how we looked until I looked at this picture a week later.
What has happened to me?
Is it karma for all those times I mocked the tourists?
Is it because we're lazy?
Is it because we're married and just don't care?
Have I been wrong all these years and those tourists really do have fashion sense?

Charlie Brown gave it to me!

I put up my tree. That's right, you heard me, I put up my TREE! It's a dang good tree too! So call the holiday police on me. I'm not skipping Thanksgiving. I believe in celebrating all the holidays in the right order and for that reason I'm calling it my Thanksgiving tree - until Friday when it will affectionately become known as my Christmas tree. What? You think the Pilgrims didn't have trees? I beg to differ! What do you think they sat on? Rocking chairs don't make themselves! What do you think they burned to cook their food? Hickory flavoring comes from Hickory TREES people. It just so happens that I enjoy a nice pine flavor to my turkey so my Thanksgiving tree is pine this year. (I won't burn the tree itself, but I'll see if I can get some pine chips for the oven.)

It's a dang good tree. Just the right size and the appropriate amount of decoration. It's going to be a pain to take down all those ornaments, but at least I'll get to enjoy it for the next month!

See, isn't it beautiful?

It just makes me so thankful to even look at it!

I didn't stop with just one decoration, but I also put up my Thanksgiving nativity.

It's hard to tell from this picture, but that shepherd has a turkey drumstick in his hand, and that wiseman is chowing down some mashed potatoes!
Happy Thanksgiving!

I blame it on the economy.

This morning during my daily commute up Lamb Blvd I saw something very peculiar, nay shocking that I wasn't quite sure how to react. I think I audibly gasped and rightly so.

(Here's a reenactment shot of what I must have looked like, you'll be very greatful I didn't actually take a picture of what I saw!)
I'm used to seeing school aged children waiting for the bus or I've even gotten used to seeing some of the same cars on their daily commute. Those are the strangers that I call my friends and there's some comfort in that routine that makes my drive relaxing and uneventful.

This morning I got an extra special little treat. I saw someone who I would assume was a homeless gentleman getting dressed for the day. He had apparently slept right there on the sidewalk which instantly turned it into his bedroom. Well good for him. I applaud him and his sense of hygiene and desire to start each day with a fresh set of clothes. Before I could contemplate the fact that he chose to get dressed on the sidewalk (facing the street I might add) rather than a public restroom or even behind a building, I was instantly distracted by the article of clothing he was changing into. The lucky commuter just a few blocks behind me would've been privileged enough to wittness perhaps the fresh socks or maybe his new shirt. It just so happened that I stumbled upon the gentleman while he was changing his underwear. I don't think I need to point out to everyone that in order to change your underwear, you must first remove all outerwear. Ahem. Need I say more? Let's see then, what's that expression again?

In his birthday suit...

Nude...

In the buff...

Naked...

Devoid of all clothing...

Textile challenged...
I think you get my drift.
I'll probably take Nellis Blvd as an alternative route tomorrow.

The sky is falling! Again!

I love rain! During the last rain storm I walked outside barefoot and just stood in it. It's so refreshing and lovey to feel those drops. I could just stand outside in a warm rain until I'm completely drenched. Like I said (Pause for dramatic effect), I LOVE RAIN.
Unless...
it starts raining on you while your sitting at your kitchen table eating breakfast. Yep, actually that would be the kind of rain that I don't like. The fact that the master bathroom is directly above my kitchen has to be a coincidence right? Since I have to have a giant hole cut in my ceiling anyway, do you think I should hold out for a small elevator to be built in. That would really be nice for those middle-of-the-night water breaks - and I'm sure the plumber wouldn't charge extra.

Wanna hear a plumbing joke? (If not, skip to the end of this post)

A lawyer in California needed a leak fixed and called the plumber; who after about 45 minutes was done and all cleaned up.
“That will be $75″ said the plumber.
The lawyer objected saying “I’m a lawyer, and I don’t even get that much an hour!
“The plumber responded: “I didn’t either, when I was a lawyer”.

to Recap
Rain Outside = Good Thing
Rain in your kitchen = Bad Thing

Thanksgiving favorites

What I'm looking forward to the most for Thanksgiving.

Roasted to perfection - not by me. I have no clue how to cook this beast.

Some of this
A lot of this

Let's be honest, I'll down a few of these

Although I'll bake 'em, I probably won't have any room to eat 'em. Stomach room is a hot commodity and I need to plan it's filling strategically.

Usually not room for this, but an hour or so after the feast I'll be good to go.

This is a necessity

And of course a little excitement

What are you looking forward to?

The sky is falling!

With recent changes to the economy along with instruction from religious leaders telling me to prepare for hard times, I'm having a difficult time trying to save money and create a generous supply of food storage should we be hit by any great catastrophe. I've turned to penny pinching in every aspect of my life. As you may have already noticed, I am now hand making all my bedding, I've turned to making my own bread, and I'm considering selling my hair like Jo in Little Woman. Any takers? (Jo got $25 so I would at least expect $2,500 with inflation and all)

Because I'm looking to save in every place I can, I took a serious look at my paycheck and discovered something that I am paying for that I may not necessarily ever use. Read an email exchange with my broker as I asked for her advice on this matter.

So, if the second coming happens in my lifetime, what’s going to happen to my 401(k) account? I’m seriously considering stopping my contributions. I could totally use the money now.

Right now is the best time to be investing. The market is so cheap at the moment. Guaranteed your 401k is down for the year but the more shares you obtain the better for future growth. Here's my thoughts on the second coming. When the Lord comes again (hopefully soon and in our lifetime) we will be living for an extra long time. We will need even more money! If you stop purchasing into your 401k now you will definitely start investing when the market comes back and therefore be buying at a high. I want you and *(your honey) to retire as early as you possibly can so you can go on a mission and further the Lord's work. You will be forever grateful for any and all money you put aside.
What would you spend the money on anyway?

I would probably spend my weekly contribution on frivolous items such as toothpaste, food, and the occasional bouquet of flowers to friends.
I'm actually not kidding about the toothpaste, I keep forgetting to buy some and I'm slowly using up my collection of free samples from hotels.

She had no response to that one. Technically I know that she is just offering her advice, but I still think I'm right and she is completely out of touch with reality (no offense Ash, not all of us can be world travelers like you)! I could put the money I am currently contributing in my 401(k) plan towards stocking up my food storage and the occasional new pair of shoes.

Am I right or am I right?

Election Day Ma'am

I bet you think I'm going to write about how important it is to vote and how priviledged we are to live in this country at this time when we are all given the opportunity to chose our leaders. Although I do truly believe that, there are other people out there who have a more eloquent way of expressing those thoughts and you'd be better off reading their inspiring messages. Instead I'll just do my part and remind everyone to vote (as if you hadn't made plans already - I know!) and tell you of my experience.
I'm not going to get on a soap box and tell you who I voted for and why. I don't feel the need to push my emotions on anyone else and I really think that I wouldn't be able to persuade anyone one way or another. So why waste our time?
I will say though that I voted early, and while waiting in line I got excited at being able to exercise my right as a citizen. The line wasn't very long, and I stood there with pride as I waited my turn. I was at the front of the line, next to go in and I saw someone exit. I looked at the young volunteer who was directing the voters and he looked at me, motioned with his hand and said, "ma'am".
MA'AM!
Do I look like a ma'am to you? Oh the injustice! What is it about that word that makes me cringe? At what age do we change from "miss" to "ma'am"? I demand a re-count!
I was so tempted to say something to that guy, but what?
"Um, excuse me sir (gent, lad... do guys get offended with sir?) I haven't quite reached "ma'am" status yet so if you wouldn't mind refering to me as "miss" I would appreciate it."
Am I completely off my rocker? (pun intended) Does anyone else get their undies in a bunch when they hear that word? Am I the only one who thinks "ma'am" should be reserved for the 90+ age range?
PS. In case you were wondering, I totally won the costume contest at my work!

Friday, October 31, 2008

BOO!

Think I'll win?

Happy Halloween!

Oh, and I'm totally planning on sitting outside and scaring kids with this one!
PS.

This is what my living room looked like after I was finished making my costume. Good thing my honey is a good vacuum-er!

Lazy + Bored = Me

My honey has been attending an evening class, 4 days a week for 3 hours so I don't see him very often which means that lately I've had a lot of time on my hands. Add that to the fact that I don't have any friends, I'm morbidly lazy, I live far away from everyone I know, and I have absolutely zero motivation to do anything worthwile with my time and you get one very pathetic individual. I probably could spend time working on my calling, getting to know people in my new ward, visiting the sick, feeding the hungry, etc, but I don't. Instead I have attempted new craft projects (unsuccessfully I might add as my paint-by-numbers project has been sadly abandoned after 2 weeks of exciting painting)
I have a new project however that has caused me some excitement and has resulted in 2 weeks worth of dirty laundry piling up in various corners of my bedroom, 3 days worth of dirty dishes spilling out of the sink and onto the counter (ran out of dishwasher soap... see reference to laziness above), shoes....well everywhere in the house, TV dinners every other night, and absolutely no time for me to do anything else. This is also what happened while I read the Twilight series, but it's not a book this time that is keeping me from domestic duties this time. I've found a new passion I never knew I had tucked away in me somewhere.

Quilting!

I don't own a sewing machine, that would be too easy anyway! Nope, this is your old fashioned needle and thread version. Had I known everything that is required, I probably would have picked an easier pattern. Or done this stamp thing that a friend of a friend Lindsey is doing on her (way better than mine) hand-stiched quilt. (Seriously, check it out. This girl is amazing!)

Here's an example of my handiwork.

I've got 2 sqares completed and like 898 to go. It's actually supposed to be an 8 inch square, but I came up with the brilliant idea to add a border around the squares and instantly I have a 12 inch square! Horay for having to sew less squares!
Don't look too close or you'll see that the seams don't exactly line up. So if you're wondering why I don't return your phone call or have time to visit you, now you know. I'll be done in around 2 1/2 years or so. But you can still send a Christmas card! I might even get around to sending one back - next year of course. Don't expect too much from the lazy.

Mum's the word

I have the best costume for Halloween! I'm not even trying to toot my own horn here since I actully don't own any horns and I'm more a fan of the woodwind family anyway. But I will say it's darn good and it's totally going to win the $150 prize at my work. (At least it better since I spent a whole $20 on it!)

Trust me it's that good!

I'm not telling you what it is because you might tell someone I work with and they might try to copy me and then I wouldn't win anything. Ok, I know that the odds of that happening are very slim, but mostly I'm not telling you to add to the suspense. I bet you're dying to know what it is. (Could you at least pretend you're dying to know? It's good for my ego)
I'm not even going to give you a clue, but I will show you my honey's reaction to seeing me in costume.
(Yes, he is vacuuming... In a suit. Sorry ladies, he's taken)
That's right, I got that reaction out of a man who's seen me without make-up (and worse). Bet you're dying to know now aren't you? Wahahaha!

Is that an age spot under my wrinkle?

I know this is completely out of character for me to write 2 blog posts on the same day, but I almost forgot a very important event that I must document.

So you know how I was recently married? Of course you do, all 2 people reading this were both at my wedding. (Hi Sheree and Eliza!) Well so many things happen in that one instant when you say "I do". A whole lifetime of singledom has been replaced instantly by "old married lady". The guy at the voting place today called me ma'am (which I will probably vent about in another blog).

But anyways, it's official, I'm an adult. I'm an old, married, boring, adult. Wanna know why else I know that's true. Because last year at halloween time Alber and I dressed up as Zorro and Elena. We totally looked way hot too. I searched hard for the picture but I couldn't find it so just take my word that we looked exactly like Antonio and Ms. Zeta-Jones. We went to the single-adult dance and many even asked for our autographs. Ok, that's an exaggeration, but we were indeed young and hip. This year we will definately NOT be dressing like the young, cute, hip, couple we were but a short year ago.

Why you may ask? Well, rather than attending the single adult dance and tearing up the floor, we've been asked to Chaperone the very same event! Just a short 5 months ago, when I was still a single adult I went to these dances and now a piece of paper and a wedding band have instantly qualified me to be the adult supervision. Are you kidding me? Oh, say it isn't so.

The dance is tonight and I'm so embarrassed. What will the other "old people" say when they see me. Do I have to bring a Book of Mormon to stick between people dancing too close? Will they know that I'm not really qualified to chaperone anyone? Will they ask to see my marriage licence? I'm thinking about bringing my quilting project and maybe some reading glasses. I've got pictures of my niece and nephews that I can pretend are my kids. (Thanks to both my sisters for doing such a great job of procreating!) I can say we adopted because there's no way anyone will believe that the blond hair, blue-eyed Dobbins kids are the genetic offspring of my honey. (No latin blood in those kids fo sho)

No seriously, this isn't funny. This in an EMERGENCY! If I just go to the church and hide in one of the classrooms does that count as chaperoning? I'm kind of freaking out about the whole thing. What if any of my friends go?

Technologically Inept

I received the following text this week:

Hey I put u as a referance 4 CSN scholaships k theyll prolly email u is ur email still the same one. Btw hows everything?

Ok, that's cool and I can totally be a reference for my friend despite the fact that her spelling is a little off (all the typos above are intentional). My only problem is, I have no clue who sent me this. The phone number appeared, but I don't have it programed in my phone. I'm drawing a complete blank as to who I know that could be applying for a scholarship. What do I do?
Do I respond like I know who it is and just say, "Yeah, that's cool, my email is the same and everything's great!"
Do I try to figure out who it is? "What scholarship? Anything specific I should say? What classes will you be taking?"
Do I just ask flat out? "Who is this?"
Or do I do what I've done so far, pretend they had the wrong number and not answer.

Does that make me a horrible person?

Hello, anybody there?

So last week I poured my heart into what I thought was a super funny blog. I did research, I found pictures, I was clever and witty. And what do I get? Only 2 comments! TWO! Come on people. Where's the comment love?

Just for that I'm not going to write anything for a little while. So there!

(Actually friends, I'm super busy. I'll write when I have a chance. But you can still leave me a comment to tell me that you miss me.)

My BFF

I hate being “it”.
Unless it’s hide and seek. I liked being “it” in hide and seek. Not because I was exceptionally stealth at discovering an unsuspecting victim, but because when I was the one who had to hide, I would almost always wet my pants. And by almost always I mean EVERY TIME! I don’t know if it’s just nerves or excitement, but as a kid, 9 times out of 10 when we would play hide and seek with the neighborhood kids, I would have to find time to sneak home and change my pants because of another accident. That 1 other time out of ten, my little “accident” wouldn’t be big enough to warrant a trip home. Gross I know, but some of you probably ate dirt as kids so don’t even judge me.
Seriously, stop looking at me like that, it was kind of traumatic. To this day I don’t enjoy hide and seek, unless I’m “it”. I have this fear that if I’m hiding, my childlike reflexes will take over and I don’t always carry an extra pair of pants with me. Oh the shame!
We’ll I’m “it” again because I’ve been tagged by 2 friends on the same day. (shout out to Nicoley-face and Shara)
Unfortunately these were different tags so one post doesn’t fit all. I’ve decided to make up my own response and since I don’t have very many secrets left, (hello! I just told you I wet my pants as a kid!), I’m going to follow in my friend Sheree’s blogsteps (like footsteps only virtual and stiletto) and write a tag about someone else.
I picked her because it’s Halloween season.
1. Random fact about me from 10 years ago: I was giving flying lessons to that kid Harry Potter. It’s embarrassing I know, but I was out of a job and I needed some quick cash. Believe me if I’d have known how famous and popular that warlock was going to become I would’ve charged him more. Who knew that 21st Century brats would actually like this magic stuff? Back in my day they just ran away screaming. I always knew I was born in the wrong century.
2. Random item on my to-do list today: Scoop my cat Blackie’s litter box. That Fresh Step stuff is definitely not fresh! Enough said.
3. Random snack I enjoy: Fish eyes, I never leave home without them. It sound’s a little out there, but you really just need to try them. They’re the perfect size and so filling. Also very low in calories, I’m trying to watch my weight since I got my new broom and realized they just don’t make ‘em as sturdy as they used to.
4. Random thing I would do if I were a millionaire: Find Michael Jackson’s plastic surgeon and get a skin color change. What? You think I like being green? Heck no, yellow is totally this year’s green!
5. Random place I’ve lived: The Eiffel Tower. Not the one in Paris, but the replica on the Vegas strip. Well wouldn’t you if you could fly? The people-watching is so much more exciting there, plus my French is really rusty.
6. Random job I’ve had: I was a credit card customer service rep. Until one day someone called in and said I sounded like a green witch. It must have been Cleo, she’s the only one I know who can tell skin color by the voice. Plus I had just called her earlier that day to get my future read and I told her I was a green witch. You just can’t trust those psychics!

I hope you enjoyed a little insight into the Wicked Witch of the West. I was a little surprised myself by some of her responses. Fish eyes! Yuck! If you’re wondering how I was able to get her to respond to my questions you should probably know that we’re old friends. In fact, here’s a picture of us on Halloween last year!
Now for my turn to tag people. I have no clue if these people read my blog, but I’m choosing to tag: Val Kilmer, Barak Obama, John McCain (just to be fair), Nicole Kidman, and President Monson. YOU’RE IT!

Feeling the burn

I'm going to eat healthy. I'm going to be good. I'm going to go to Subway everyday so someday I can make oodles of cash and meet famous people like my friend Jared. I've made my resolution. I've even decided that since there is a Subway about 1 mile from my work that I can walk there on my lunch hour, pick up a sandwitch to go and walk back. Best idea I've ever had.

I tried it out today.

I drove.

I want to pace myself.

Peeking out from the closet

I’m a firm believer in celebrating holidays and getting into the holiday spirit. And I’m not just talking about the big holidays like Kwanza and Yom Kippur either. I mean all the holidays. I’m not a discriminator of holidays. I try to participate in as many as possible. I’m fully aware that National Bosses day is coming up next week and I should probably do something nice for mine. (I probably won’t do anything, but at least I recognize that I should right?) I try to pop as much popcorn as possible this month since October is National Popcorn Popping Month. Since it is also National Diabetes Month, I stick to the sugar free popcorn or I just don’t eat it. And here I thought that October was just National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. If I thought that, I would be robbed of properly celebrating National Pizza Month. It’s also National Vegetarian Month so I’ve thrown out all the Spam and Beef Flanks from my storage. I probably wasn’t going to eat that stuff anyway. Hmmm, maybe I could try making a sugar-free vegetarian popcorn pizza. My mouth is already watering! I’m not even kidding, for a list of all the different Holidays and Observances for the month of October go here. I hope none of you missed out on Name Your Car Day October 2nd.

Imagine my surprise when I turned over my monthly calendar this morning (I know it’s already October 6th and I should have done it 6 days ago, get over it) and I discovered a new holiday I didn’t even know existed. Where did it come from? What am I supposed to do now? The date is this Saturday and I had fully expected to celebrate It’s My Party Day. I’ve already got the invitations ready to send to myself and I’ve printed extra pictures of myself to post around my house. What am I supposed to do now that my trusty work calendar says that Saturday, October 11th is National Gay and Lesbian Coming Out Day. I would hate to pass up the chance to celebrate. I can’t stand the thought that there are others out there celebrating their escape from the closet when I’m celebrating my party with no closets involved. Am I allowed to come out even when I was never in? I guess I can always change the name of my party to It’s My Coming Out Party Day. If the closet is literal and not figurative does it still count? I think I can make this work somehow. I’ll take any suggestions from any of you who already had your party plans and didn’t share them with me. I’m so desperate to do this right!
Also, don’t forget that tomorrow is World Smile Day. That’s an easy one to celebrate!
Happy Celebrating to all!

"E" like Extraordinary "Liza" like Minnelli

*She's the only person I know who will submit a jar of homemade pomegranate jelly to the state fair.

*She looks like me - lucky girl

*She read the Twilight series in less time than it took me, which says a lot for someone with 4 kids

*She makes cute babies

*She likes the same reality shows that I do and will call me to gossip about our favorite players.

*She made her 12 year old put on 5 hours of Pride and Prejudice on a Saturday when all he wanted to do was play video games

*She would be my phone call home if I were ever on Biggest Loser

*She totally just ripped up her carpet because she was sick of cleaning it

*She goes to the gym daily and does water aerobics and yoga (secretly I think she just goes for the free day care and for the chance to get away from babies)

*She laughs at my blog posts, even when they aren't funny - now that's love

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SISTER!
